Chimney Relining

Any chimney that has cracked tiles, either due to a flue fire, foundation shifting, or missing mortar joints will need to be relined. Most masonry chimneys are constructed with an inner liner of clay tiles. The purpose of this liner is to keep the heat of flue gases inside the chimney so the chimney can't overheat the nearby combustible material, such as the framing and walls of your house, and possibly cause a fire. The liner also keeps carbon monoxide, moisture, smoke, creosote, and other products of combustion from seeping through the bricks and mortar of your chimney and leaking into your home. As you can see, a secure lining system is crucial to the safety and well being of your home and family. This brings us to a chimney relining system. What is it? Simple. It's what you need when the original clay tile liner was either never installed, or when the tile lining cracks, crumbles and deteriorates over time. Water damage, chimney fires, or just age can cause the deterioration of your clay liner. When that happens the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA) code 211 says it must be replaced. The most popular, effective and economical way to reline your chimney is with UL.

Chimney problems can cause loss of property.

It happened thousands of times last year - chimney defects resulted in home fires. It doesn't take much to start a home fire...a spark flitting through a crack in the chimney wall into the attic...a chimney ember igniting a creosote fire which then climbs the full height of the chimney "looking" for a breech in the chimney wall...or simply excessive heat reflected through chimney walls when a clay liner is missing or damaged.

Fortunately, the problems of a deteriorating chimney can be corrected without completely rebuilding your chimney. With continued use of this chimney, any of these conditions could lead to loss of property or life. Vonderhaar’s will restore and revitalize your chimney by putting stainless steel between your chimney flue and the defects in your chimney walls. This will add to the safety of your home and family. And it will increase the resale value of your home.

Stainless steel construction is unsurpassed in strength and protection. It has been tested and listed by Underwriters Laboratories to their highest heat test standard. And for woodburning applications, Our chimney relining systems are warrantied for as long as you own your home.

Crownseal

Flexible Waterproof Coating

CrownSeal is a proprietary elastomeric coating that forms a flexible waterproof membrane. Product is specifically formulated to repair and protect chimney crowns from water intrusion. CrownSeal can also be used for a variety of horizontal and vertical exterior waterproofing applications. It dries to a natural concrete/mortar appearance. CrownSeal is an extremely long lasting and durable.

Uses

CrownSeal can be used wherever a long-lasting exterior waterproof membrane is needed, such as chimney crowns, chimney corbels, the tops of masonry walls, including parapets, and stucco repair. Other uses include masonry window sills where bricks are laid in a soldier pattern at the base of windows.

CrownSeal can be used as a bonding mortar to replace badly spalled brick units or for parging over brick faces that may have spalled, if remaining brick is solid. Product can be used for crack repair, surface grouting and tuck pointing. CrownSeal can be colored using small amounts of standard mortar dye. If dyes are used, transfer material to be colored from the original container into a clean mixing container. Before adding dye, let product stand uncovered for approximately 10 minutes to thicken. Add mortar dye one or two drops at a time, and mix with trowel or paddle mixer and drill until desired color is reached.

Protect Your Chimney From The Top Down

Water damage or cracked chimney crowns can lead to costly chimney repairs. Fight back with CrownSeal: the flexible crown repair formulated to withstand the severe weather and thermal stress that causes cracks. Damaged and crowns allow water to deteriorate your masonry and the chimneys liner. Years of water and intrusion and neglect can lead to extensive chimney repairs.

Prevent Costly Repairs

CrownSeal Is a long-term solution to stop water intrusion, which is the major cause of chimney deterioration. When the Crown fails, the entire chimney system is more susceptible to damage. A professionally installed crown seal application is guaranteed to protect your investment and save you money. The photo below shows a cracked, damaged crown which will allow water to seep into the chimney with every rain. Compare this to the chimney sealed with crown seal shown to the right.

Water Repellent

Chimney Saver - 10 Year Limited Warranty

Water Damage Can Be Prevented

Chimneys are highly exposed to the elements and, if left unprotected, are susceptible to structural deterioration. It is important to address this problem before serious damage occurs. A complete chimney protection program should include repairing the crown with CrownSeal or CrownCoat, as well as waterproofing the entire chimney with ChimneySaver water repellent.

Protect Your Investment

There are approximately 40 million masonry chimneys in North America and the most common problem with these structures is water penetration. Water causes over a billion dollars in damage annually in the form of staining, loss of insulation value, freeze-thaw damage, deterioration, and ultimately structural failure. ChimneySaver is a WATER REPELLENT - not a water sealer. The difference could save you hundreds, or even thousands of dollars in repairs because sealers can actually damage masonry. Unlike waterproofing sealers that remain on the surface, ChimneySaver penetrates deep enough to protect masonry from destructive water penetration while maintaining the structure's vapor permeability.

Severe spalling and deterioration is caused by water penetration. Efflorescence stains caused by water penetration and leaching salts are unsightly and add to deterioration. Water penetration and freeze/thaw damage result in loss of insulation value and lead to structural failure.
This partially rebuilt chimney would continue to deteriorate if left unprotected.

Long-Term Protection

ChimneySaver is an investment in long-term protection that will help prevent expensive reconstruction. No water repellent, however, is a substitute for good construction and workmanship. The first step in preventing water damage is to make necessary repairs to structural cracks, damaged crowns, flashings, deteriorated bricks, and mortar joints. The second step is to protect porous masonry from further water penetration by applying ChimneySaver Water Repellent. Protection is particularly needed when a new chimney liner has been installed. If repairs and preventive measures are not taken, the old chimney will continue to deteriorate around the new liner.

Superior Technology

ChimneySaver contains patented siloxanes small enough to penetrate most masonry pores up to 1/4" or more. These special siloxanes form strong bonds with the silica in masonry and concrete. Because of this bonding process, one application of ChimneySaver provides up to ten times the water repellent protection of typical sealers while maintaining the masonry's breathability.

100% Breathable

Moisture from a variety of sources is always present in masonry and concrete. Sealers and silicone coatings form a water resistant surface film which traps water vapors inside. If these vapors cannot escape, they will contribute to spalling, scaling, deterioration, and freeze-thaw damage. ChimneySaver is 100% vapor permeable - a non film-forming water repellent that penetrates and lines masonry pores. Major & Minor Masonry Repair

Here is a very important reason why you should choose Vonderhaar’s to repair your chimney.

We know chimneys. In the chimney repair industry you will find out that most companies sub-contract their work to the lowest charging mason. We do and guarantee all of our own work! Safety and structural integrity is our business.

  • Tuckpointing
  • Brick Replacement
  • Crown Replacement
  • Chimney Rebuilds
  • Firebox Rebuilds
  • Cultured Stone, Brick , Block, and Stucco
  • Waterproofing

The most important part of a chimney is the crown. No one takes a crown as seriously as we do! Like a house needs a roof to keep water from entering a chimney needs a crown. All too often, brick masons simply use mortar mix to finish off the top of a chimney. Over time mortar crown’s crack because they are porous. Notice the picture, to the right, of a typical chimney deteriorating. There is a crack between were the crown and the brick meet. Water gets into these cracks and the freeze and thaw cycles of winter weather deteriorates the crown further. Unless you correct the problem you can expect further and rapid deterioration of your entire chimney. When we replace a crown or rebuild your chimney we will build a crown that is not only reinforced concrete but also formed so that the crown protrudes past the masonry to form a drip edge (see picture). We also chemically enhance the crown so that it cures stronger and harder keeping water out and eliminating any cracks. Not only do we water proof our chimney, but we add water proofing to our mortar mix in the last 3 courses to increasing the life of the chimney.
